Call for Scores

Our inaugural call for scores was a call for artists to submit their own works in response to “Lavender Among Thorns,” a poem written by AQP awardee Nicolas Bizub. The call for scores opened in the Fall of 2022 and closed on 2/28/2023. In this short time frame, Antigone Commissioning received over 40 submissions from composers ranging from amateurs to award-winning professionals around the world.

Of these submissions, Ethan Soledad’s new string quartet “Lavender Among Thorns” was selected to be performed on WGUC’s music Monday program to promote Antigone’s flagship project, the Antigone Quartet Prize. You can hear our radio performance of the new work below.

  • Inspired by the poem “Lavender Among Thorns” by Nicolas Bizub. The scratch tones and air sounds in the beginning of the piece represent the harsh and unforgiving quality of the thorns before being interrupted by the brilliant harmonics to represent the lavender bursting forth from them. The gentle swells depict the image of flowers blooming and coming to a climax as the lavender easily overtakes the thorns. The return of the air sounds in the first violin towards the end represent the fact that even though the thorns have been thinned significantly, they still exist, even among the lavender.
